Built in 537 by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, Hagia Sophia was the world’s largest cathedral for more than a thousand years. It was later converted into a mosque under the Ottomans and continues to function as one today. Its soaring 56-meter dome, original Byzantine mosaics, Ottoman calligraphy, and rare Viking inscriptions make it one of the most remarkable landmarks in the world.

Constructed between 1609 and 1616 for Sultan Ahmed I, this masterpiece is famous as Turkey’s first mosque with six minarets. The interior is decorated with over 20,000 handcrafted İznik tiles and features elegantly proportioned domes, representing the height of Ottoman architecture. Today, it serves both as an active mosque and as one of Istanbul’s most visited attractions.

Once the center of public life in Roman and Byzantine Constantinople, the Hippodrome hosted chariot races, celebrations, and imperial ceremonies. Visitors can still see historic monuments such as the Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpentine Column, and the Column of Constantine. The German Fountain, built during the late Ottoman era, also stands prominently in the square.

Founded in 1461 by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, the Grand Bazaar is considered the oldest and largest covered market in the world. With more than 4,000 shops, it offers a vibrant mix of carpets, jewelry, spices, antiques, and handicrafts. Its maze-like streets, vaulted ceilings, and historic inns create an authentic cultural experience as well as a shopper’s paradise.

Commissioned by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in 1459, Topkapi Palace was the residence of Ottoman sultans and the administrative heart of the empire for nearly four centuries. Key highlights include the Chamber of Holy Relics, the priceless Spoonmaker’s Diamond, the Topkapi Dagger, and the Imperial Harem (requires an additional ticket). The palace terraces also offer spectacular panoramic views of the Bosphorus.
